Our History
The Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre Inc., founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1986, has been a vital link for the Maroochydore and surrounding communities for over 40 years. Built for the community, by the community, it has grown from humble beginnings into a welcoming hub offering compassionate support for families, children, and people experiencing homelessness and financial hardship.
The Centre’s story began when land was leased from the Lands Department and apprentices from TAFE constructed the original building. With support from the Maroochy Shire Council, Rotary Clubs, and dedicated community champions Dulcie Hewitt and Jackie Ellenson, who travelled around Australia raising funds to furnish the Centre, laying the foundation for the strong community spirit that continues today.
Through programs such as community development, the One Roof Project, Family Support Program, Urban Farm, and commercial kitchen, the Centre provides essential services, skill-building opportunities, and social connections.
In 2022 we proudly launched Queensland’s first Sleepbus, offering safe overnight accommodation for those experiencing homelessness.
Guided by the principles of empowerment, participation, and inclusivity, the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre continues to strengthen lives and foster a connected, caring community.
